PODS Colloquium on Theory Challenges in Big Data - Sunday 6/23 6:00pm-8:30pm

Big Data has taken the entire Computer Science research community by storm, yet very little research in the database theory community has supported Big Data. Is Big Data even a data management problem? Big Data creates new challenges for machine learning, statistics, visualization, distributed system. But what are the challenges for Data Management? Do they find answers in PODS papers of the past, or do they warrant new models, new techniques, new theorems? The PODS community has traditionally responded very well to new trends in data management, and now, we argue, is a good time for it to take a deep look at the theory challenges generated by Big Data Management. For this colloquium we have invited several distinguished researchers that have both experience with big data and a good understanding of theory to give us a short perspective on their view of the role of database theory, and theory in general, in Big Data. The colloquium will end with a Q/A session, followed by the traditional PODS reception.
