If everything has gone as planned, then you will have noticed the new cover design for the Record - its first update since 1986. The Record has changed a lot since then. In 1986, Maggie Dunham ran the Record by herself, whereas now we have a venerable board of nine Associate Editors who are responsible for seven regular columns in addition to the Articles, Reports, and Technical Notes that the Record has traditionally published. Given these substantial changes, as well as the impressive number of new initiatives going on in SIGMOD as a whole, we decided it was time to update the look of the Record in both its print and electronic versions. The new cover was designed by Bob Vizzini with help from Heather Levell of ACM. Some recent changes in the Editorial Board: Jignesh Patel from the Univ. of Michigan has agreed to take over the ``Systems and Prototypes'' section from Praveen Seshadri, and Ken Ross of Columbia University will be taking over the popular ``Influential Papers'' section, which was founded by Rick Snodgrass. Also, Leonid Libkin of Bell Labs will be editing a new section entitled ``Database Principles'', that will be focused on presenting recent advances in database theory in a format that will be of interest to practitioners. This new feature will debut in the December 1999 issue. Thanks to Praveen and Rick for their contributions to the SIGMOD Record.
