Abstract

This tutorial provides an overview of the emerging next generation of the SQL Standard, SQL3, expected to be approved in 1997. SQL3's new capabilities can be divided into two categories: extensions to relational facilities (new data types, new predicates, triggers, recursive query expressions, view updatability, stored procedures, control flow, exception handling, and a call-level interface), and object support (abstract data types, encapsulation, object identity, inheritance, polymorphism, dynamic binding, parameterized types, and collection types like set, list, and multiset).
