Ongoing Call for SIGMOD Award Nominations

SIGMOD accepts nominations for its awards all year round, with an annual cut-off date. Nominations received by February 1 are considered for the awards presented at that year’s SIGMOD/PODS conference; later nominations are considered the following year.

Nominate early. Preparing a nomination and evaluating nominations both take time and care. They also matter to our community: awards recognize excellence, celebrate dedication, and highlight role models who inspire the next generation. Strong nominations often benefit from reflection and from the input of several colleagues, so please submit whenever a deserving candidate comes to mind, not only as the cut-off approaches. You can update a nomination at any time.

Nominations carry over. Nominations remain active for two years, unless noted otherwise below, and the Awards Committee reconsiders them automatically. You are welcome to update the supporting material.

How to submit

Send nominations by e-mail to the SIGMOD Awards Chair, Sharad Mehrotra (sharad AT ics.uci.edu), and to Manos Athanassoulis (mathan AT bu.edu). For any questions about a nomination, contact the SIGMOD Awards Chair.

Awards open for nomination

Award What to submit
Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award The nominee’s CV, a proposed citation (up to 25 words), a description of the innovation (100–250 words), a detailed statement justifying the nomination, and up to three supporting letters.
Contributions Award The nominee’s CV, a proposed citation (up to 25 words), a description of the contribution (100–250 words), a detailed statement justifying the nomination, and up to three supporting letters.
Hector Garcia-Molina Distinguished Mentorship Award A nomination letter (up to 2 pages) and at least three supporting letters, at least one from someone the nominee did not directly supervise, as a single PDF. Nominations remain active for three years.
Systems Award The system, a proposed citation (up to 25 words), a description of the innovation and contribution (100–250 words) that justifies its significance and the choice of nominees, and up to three supporting letters.
Test of Time Award A justification of up to 750 words (plain text preferred) for a paper from the SIGMOD proceedings 10–12 years earlier. Supporting letters are not accepted.

Self-nominations are not accepted. Supporting letters should convey additional facts, not simply endorse the nomination. The current elected officers of SIGMOD (Chair, Vice Chair, and Treasurer) and the members of the SIGMOD Awards Committee cannot be nominated while serving. The Awards Committee may also identify candidates itself and is not required to choose among submitted nominations. Each award’s page has its full criteria and past recipients.

The Jim Gray Doctoral Dissertation Award and the conference-level awards (Best Paper, Best Demonstration, and Best Artifact) have their own processes; see their pages.
