Just for Students
SIGMOD 2012 technical and social programs will include various events designed specifically for student attendees:
- Travel Scholarships: Thanks to the generous support from NSF, SAP and the SIGMOD Executive Committee, we will provide travel scholarships to students, which will provide financial support for traveling and conference registrations. The recipients of the travel scholarships are required to participate in the Ph.D. Symposium or the DataBase MEntoring workshop. More details about the requirements and applications for the travel scholarship are available at the "SIGMOD Call for Student Travel Award Applications" page.
- Recruitment Events: This year, we have 10+ Gold and
Platinum
sponsors, including
leaders in the field,
- Platinum: EMC, IO Data Centers, Microsoft, Oracle, and SAP
- Gold: Google, IBM, LinkedIn, MarkLogic, Sybase, Turn, Twitter, Vertica, and VMware
- SIGMOD/PODS Ph.D. Symposium: The SIGMOD/PODS Ph.D. Symposium is intended to bring together Ph.D. students working on topics related to the SIGMOD and PODS conferences. The workshop will offer Ph.D. students the opportunity to present, discuss, and receive feedback on their research in a constructive and international atmosphere. SIGMOD Executive has committed a certain amount of funds to support student participation, including financial support for traveling and free conference registrations. The distribution of these funds will be adjudicated after the acceptance decisions are made.
- DataBase MEntoring Workshop: The SIGMOD 2012 DataBase MEntoring workshop aims to increase the diversity of the database community through mentoring women and underrepresented minorities. Undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in database research are invited to apply to attend the workshop.
- SIGMOD 2012 Undergraduate Research Poster Competition: The SIGMOD 2012 Undergraduate Research Poster Competition provides undergraduate students an opportunity to showcase their research accomplishments. Invited students will be offered a travel stipend to defray conference attendance costs (registration fee, travel, lodging, etc.) and a "best poster" winner will be selected and announced at the SIGMOD 2012 awards session.
- New Researcher Symposium: The "New Researcher" Symposium is a forum where Ph.D. students close to completion of degrees as well as junior researchers are given advice on realizing their big ideas and personal perspectives about different work environments, on managing medium-term and long-term career risks, and on various challenges involved in human factors, such as successfully making the move from a graduate student to being part of, and productive in, a team of researchers in an industry lab or to becoming junior faculty and having to build up a research group. More details about this event will be available soon.
- Vis-a-vis Meeting with Leading Researchers: This new event aims to help Ph.D. students to meet internationally recognized researchers in their research areas and exchange ideas and receive guidance in a relaxed, social setting. More details about this event and how to participate in it will be available soon.
We hope that you will be able to take advantage of these programs and are looking forward to seeing you all in SIGMOD 2012!
